...and IN THE WINGS
Director Jennifer Baptiste is beginning rehearsals for the next SLT production, Once on This Island. With music and lyrics by Lynn Aherns, Once on This Island is an exciting Broadway musical inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid. The story is deceptively simple. It takes place on the island of Haiti. A peasant girl has fallen in love above her class and this is told around a fire by a group of Caribbean peasants as they wait out a terrible storm. However, as the story unfolds, themes about social classes, dreams, family and love, all combine to create a magical tale.

PANDEMIC PICKS
Noises Off
This film follows the rehearsal and performance of a dreadful farce called Nothing On, a hit British show that is preparing for its American debut in Des Moines, Iowa, with a second-rate, Broadway-bound theatrical troupe under the direction of Lloyd Fellowes.
An all-star cast fills Peter Bogdanovich's film including Michael
Caine, Carol Burnett, Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, Marilu Henner, Nicollette Sheridan, Julie Hagert, and Mark Linn-Baker.
Among the characters
are a fading star Dotty Otley (Burnett), a hot-tempered and scatter-brained
Garry Lejeune (Ritter), an insecure matinee heartthrob Frederick Dallas (Reeve) the myopic leading lady Brooke Ashton (Sheridan), the bubbly
Belinda Blair (Henner), and an alcoholic character actor Selsdon Mowbray (Elliott).
Frantically working behind the scenes are Tim Allgood (Linn-Baker) and Poppy
Taylor (Hagerty). Michael Caine leads as director Fellowes.
BROADWAY BAKING
No-Knead Christmas (or Anytime) Loaf from Dear Evan Hansen’s
Michael Park
The recipe:
3 cups All Purpose flour
1 3/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp rapid rise yeast
1 1/4 cup room temp water
1/2 cup room temp lager (I like Guinness actually)
2 Tbsp white vinegar
While
the kiddos are still asleep... Mix all ingredients in a bowl with the handle
end of a wooden spoon until all flour is blended in—about 5 minutes. Transfer
to a greased bowl, cover tightly with plastic wrap and let sit in a dry warm
place for the day (approximately 8 hours, but you’ll see the dough rise to
twice its original size). With a spatula, scrape the dough from the bowl to a
floured surface to shape. Using your thumb and fore finger gently pinch the “4
corners” of the dough, lift and bring to the center. You will then flip the
dough over and place on a sheet of parchment paper. Using the parchment as a
sling, transfer the dough and parchment to a cast iron Dutch oven. (You can
grab one of these online for only $25 and they are super useful!!) Let the
dough proof for another couple hours. Prepare the oven. I like to preheat to
500 degrees, if your oven only goes to 450, that's fine. While the oven is
preheating take a sharp knife and score an “X” in the top of the loaf. Once the
oven is ready, place the Dutch oven in the oven with the top on for 20 minutes.
Remove lid and bake for another 20 minutes. Let the loaf cook for at least 30
minutes before cutting to serve.
AND TO WASH IT DOWN…
